Bio-Phase Change Materials for Clean Energy Storage
What if the walls of a building could store energy - and release it when we need it?
WHAT
I investigated bio-based phase-change materials (PCMs) as a passive way to store and release thermal energy within building envelopes, helping regulate indoor temperatures and reduce the energy required for heating and cooling. The research evaluated six PCM candidates and identified a promising solution that demonstrated a 24% reduction in operational CO₂ emissions, supporting its potential as a more sustainable building technology.
WHY
Buildings consume significant energy to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures. Phase-change materials (PCMs) can passively absorb and release heat as temperatures change, reducing heating and cooling demand without requiring additional energy or complex mechanical systems.
MY IMPACT
I analyzed 32 research studies and evaluated six bio-based PCM candidates to identify the most promising material for building-envelope applications. I translated the findings into technical requirements and a product value proposition, demonstrating a reduction in operational CO₂ emissions and helping build the business case that secured $250K in research funding.
